University of the Philippines boosted its bid to enter the Final Four.
University of the Philippines connected its first back-to-back wins in the second round and boosted its chance to clinch a Final Four berth with a four-set 25-14, 25-27, 25-21, 25-12 win over National University in the 79th UAAP women’s volleyball tournament at the Big Dome Sunday.
Playing with a sense of urgency, the Lady Maroons outdueled their first round tormentors and tied their victim at 7-5 win-loss slates.
Sophomores Diana Carlos and Isa Molde led the way for the Diliman-based squad, who are now two wins away from formally joining early Final Four qualifiers Ateneo de Manila (10-2) and defending champion De La Salle University (9-2).
Carlos scored all but one of 14 points from kills while Kathy Bersola had a block party with eight kill blocks in her 14-point outing for teh Lady Maroons. Molde also registered 14 markers while Aiesha Gannaban and Marian Buitre had 13 and 12 points, respectively. Buitre had four kill blocks in UP's total of 16.
The Lady Maroons built an 18-6 third set lead but the Lady Bulldogs made a huge rally to even the frame at 20. UP held its ground in the closing stretch of the frame to take a 2-1 match lead. UP opened a 19-7 gap in the fourth set and never looked back.
The Lady Maroons' last assignments are against University of Sto. Tomas on April 2 and Far Eastern University on April 5 – both Final Four contenders.
The Lady Bulldogs saw its two-game winning streak snapped. NU played without head coach Roger Gorayeb, who skipped the match to attend the high school graduation of his son.
Skipper Jaja Santiago had 18 points from 10 kills, seven kill blocks and an ace for NU, which gave away 14 aces. Aiko Urdas got 12 while Jorelle Singh had a quiet three-point outing.
