NU's Patrick Valenzuela (28) scored the lone goal in their win against UE.
A goal from Patrick Valenzuela late in the first half was all that was needed for National University to squeak past University of the East in UAAP Season 79 men's football action, Sunday afternoon at the FEU Diliman Football Field.
With a chance to move two points ahead of University of Santo Tomas for solo fourth place, NU took charge late in the first half after Elmer Sampaga found Valenzuela for the conversion two minutes into injury time in the first half.
The Bulldogs had another chance to score in the second half after getting fouled inside the penalty box, but in an unusual twist, NU leading scorer Lawrence Colina sent the penalty kick straight into the right post.
The Red Warriors became more aggressive late in the second half, pushing the pace in search of an equalizer, but unfortunately for UE, who were playing without sophomore Mar Diano, nothing would drop.
"Happy tayo na nanalo, pero the way we won, hindi ako happy." said NU head coach Mari Aberasturi. "We gave more than eight fouls in the last ten minutes of the game, eight fouls in our own pitch, hindi pwede talaga yun, kaya kailangan trabahuin ng maayos."
With the win, NU improves to five wins, one draw, and five losses for 16 points and solo fourth place. UST with 13 points and DLSU with 12 points are close behind.
UE on the other hand falls to one win, two draws, and eight losses.
