It was an own goal late in the second half that doomed UST against Ateneo.
An own goal late in the second half sealed University of Santo Tomas' fate, as Ateneo de Manila University escaped with a 1-0 win in UAAP Season 79 men's football action, Saturday evening at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.
With the scoreboard untouched after one half of play, both sides came out aggressive in the second frame.
Looking to deal the league-leading Blue Eagles their first loss of the season, the Growling Tigers pushed the pace early getting more chances at goal.
The momentum changed towards the latter part of the match, with Ateneo getting off a number of excellent attempts of their own, most off them just inches off target.
In the 82nd minute, a bit of luck was on the side of the Ateneans as a Jarvey Gayoso cross was deflected and then bounced off UST's Marvin Bricienio before slipping past keeper Zaldy Abraham for the own goal.
With a few minutes left in the match, UST tried equalize, but couldn't convert, and Ateneo came out with the win.
"Happy na rin ako syempre," said Ateneo head coach JP Merida following the match. "Yung own goal naman, hindi naman parang nag park the bus kami, then suddenly nakakuha kami ng own goal. Nandun naman yung mga attacking play."
With the win, Ateneo improves to eight wins and two draws for 26 points.
UST on the other hand drops to four wins, one draw and five losses for 13 points.
