ABS-CBN Sports Player of the Week: Kathy Bersola
University of the Philippines' Kathy Bersola (no. 8) is ABS-CBN Sports' Player of the Week.
Graduating University of the Philippines middle Kathy Bersola struggled with her performance in the Lady Maroons’ losing slump midway in the 79th UAAP women’s volleyball tournament elimination round.
But with their chance to return in the Final Four put on the line, Bersola delivered the performance expected from a grizzled veteran.
The fifth-year player was at the forefront of the Lady Maroons' resurgence, leading the Diliman-based squad to its first back-to-back wins in the second round.
Bersola stepped up as the Lady Maroons’ leader inside the court and provided solid numbers to help push UP at third spot with a 7-5 win-loss record.
Her performance earned her the distinction as ABS-CBN Sports’ Player of the Week.
The former UP team captain showed her scoring prowess last Wednesday when she finished with 12 points in the Lady Maroons’ easy 25-15, 25-16, 25-20, win over Adamson University that served as a morale-boosting bounce back for the Diliman-based squad’s straight sets loss to De La Salle University three days before.
Bersola pounded 10 kills, a kill block and a service ace for the Lady Maroons.
The Season 76 Best Blocker followed her performance with an even bigger outing in a revenge win against another semifinals contender National University, 25-14, 25-27, 25-21, 25-12, Sunday at the Big Dome.
Bersola was solid at the net after scoring eight kill blocks in her team-high 14 points.
But her most notable contribution for Lady Maroons was keeping NU Jaja Santiago in check where she made the 6-foot-5 Santiago work hard for her 18 markers.
The crucial victories gave UP the much-needed morale boost after the Lady Maroons lost five of its next six games since starting the season with a 4-0 record.
“Sa akin, siyempre masaya and confidence-booster din (ang dalawang sunod na panalo) kasi nga medyo maraming games this season na medyo nag-struggle ako,” said Bersola. “Maganda na sa ganitong game, nakapag-perform naman.”
Bersola took the citation a few weeks after her teammate and another outgoing Lady Maroon Nicole Tiamzon earned the nod as PoW.
