Confident ako kasi confident ang mga kasama ko -- Bersola

Kathy Bersola of University of the Philippines displayed her defensive prowess against the Jaja Santiago-led National University.
Graduating University of the Philippines player Kathy Bersola played with fire in her eyes Sunday as the Lady Maroons strengthened their bid for the remaining 79th UAAP women’s volleyball tournament Final Four spot.
The fifth year player displayed her defensive prowess as she tallied eight kill blocks in her 14-point performance.
But her biggest contribution for the Lady Maroons was when she kept National University’s 6-foot-5 ace Jaja Santiago in check in UP’s 25-14, 25-27, 25-21, 25-12, win at the Big Dome.
Bersola made Santiago work hard for her 18 points.
“Oo naman (pinag-aralan ko siya), lahat naman eh. Hindi lang naman siya. Lahat naman,” she said after the Lady Maroons tied their victims with identical 7-5 win-loss cards.
UP assistant coach Rald Ricafort wasn’t surprised with how Bersola measured up with Santiago in their rematch.
“Well kay Kathy, since game 1 ng unang round, hindi siya nagkukulang sa pagre-review ng games at review ng match-up niya,” he said. “So hindi siya kailangan sabihan ng paulit-ulit, inaaral niya ng kusa. So medyo nagbunga.”
The former UP team captain and Season 76 Best Blocker credited her teammates for her inspired play.
“Ewan ko, parang nadala lang talaga ako kasi sobrang nage-enjoy kami kanina,” said Bersola. “Naging confident ako kasi confident ‘yung mga kasama ko.”
The win was the Diliman-based squad’s first back-to-back wins in the second round and kept them on the right track to clinch a second straight Final Four stint. It also served as a revenge win for UP after dropping a five-set match against NU in the first round where the Lady Maroons lost graduating libero Pia Gaiser after sustaining a left ACL tear.
“Malaki (ang panalo na ito) kasi ayun nga, medyo kailangan namin 'yung wins,” she said. “Pero ayun, like before lang, we try to tone it down para hindi kami ma-overwhelm at para hindi kami maging masyadong kumpyansa next game.”
UP’s last assignments are against University of Sto. Tomas on April 2 and Far Eastern University on April 5 – both Final Four contenders.
