National University stretched its winning streak to 10.
National University survived an upset scare from the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons, 27-25, 25-18, 22-25, 19-25, 15-12, Wednesday to extend its winning streak to 10 in the 79th UAAP men’s volleyball tournament at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
The semifinals-bound Bulldogs squandered a two-set lead but held on in the closing stretch of the deciding frame to improve their record to 11-1 at second spot behind league-leading and undefeated defending champion Ateneo de Manila (12-0).
Fauzi Ismail was on target, scoring 30 points with 25 coming off kills with four kill blocks and a service ace to lead NU. Bryan Bagunas smashed 20 of the Bulldogs total of 66 attack points to end up with 23 markers while Season 78 rookie of the year James Natividad got 10.
Kim Dayandante tallied 43 excellent sets for NU, which again gave away an atrocious number of errors with 40 after its season-high 51 miscues given to De La Salle last Saturday in another five-set thriller.
UP dropped another five-set match after a sorry defeat against University of Sto. Tomas last Saturday. The Maroons slid to 5-7 slate at fifth spot.
Skipper Wendel Miguel and John Mark Millete finished with 17 points each for the Diliman-based squad while Alfred Valbuena had 14.
