Reigning titlist De La Salle University sets its eyes on acquiring a semis twice-to-beat advantage.
Defending champion De La Salle University shoots for a Final Four twice-to-beat advantage in a collision with University of Sto. Tomas Wednesday in the 79th UAAP women’s volleyball tournament at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
The Lady Spikers are the only unbeaten team in the second round sporting a 9-2 slate at second spot behind league-leading archrival Ateneo de Manila (10-2).
DLSU is looking for fifth straight victory in the scheduled 4:00 p.m. battle airing live on ABS-CBN S+A Channel 23, ABS-CBN S+A HD Channel 166 and via livestream.
A win by the Taft-based squad will give them the semis advantage while handing the other twice-to-beat incentive to the idle Lady Eagles, locking the top two spots with four more playdates to go in elims.
“’Yung target namin mag-1 or 2 para makuha mo y’ung advantage na twice-to-beat sana magtuloy-tuloy (ang panalo),” said DLSU coach Ramil De Jesus. “Importante ‘yung game namin sa Wednesday na kung manalo kami sa UST siguro sure na sa 1 or 2. Importante makuha namin ‘yung twice-to-beat ‘yun ‘yung aim naming.”
DLSU defeated University of the East, 25-16, 25-15, 25-9, last Saturday and is looking to make a repeat of their 25-23, 16-25, 25-14, 25-22, win over the Tigresses last February 11.
But it won’t be an easy task as UST going all-out to get closer to attaining their goal of making it to the semifinals after missing the last four editions.
“’Yung UST talagang every game nagi-improve,” said De Jesus. “Siguro dapat paghandaan ng husto. Isa rin sila sa maganda ‘yung standings so kailangan talaga paghandaan.”
The Tigresses sport a 7-4 record and a win will boost their chance to clinch a semis spot and will give them a one-game cushion over University of the Philippines and National University, who both hold 7-5 cards.
UST mentor Kungfu Reyes is looking at this key clash with the Lady Spikers as a good gauge on how his team has gone so far.
"Medyo umaangat na kami pero wala pa rin kami doon sa talaga sa 80 percent. Nasa 70 to 75 percent pa lang," said Reyes. "Hopefully, sa last three games namin, at least pumalo kami ng 80 percent sa iginagalaw namin."
