DLSU's Iñigo Gonzales (10) celebrates after scoring against NU.
De La Salle University moved closer to the fourth seed in UAAP season 79 men's football after getting past National University, Thursday afternoon at thr Moro Lorenzo Football Field in Ateneo.
With University of Santo Tomas figuring in a draw with defending champions University of the Philippines earlier that afternoon, both DLSU and NU looked to capitalize on the loss by moving ahead or creating distance.
In the end, it was DLSU who made the most of the situation.
The Green Archers struck early in the match, with captain Iñigo Gonzales scoring in the 12th minute of the match to go ahead.
The Taft side never looked back as they managed to hold on to the 1-0 lead up until the final whistle.
For their part, National U tried hard to bring the match to level with striker Lawrence Colina getting some good shots off, but ultimately couldn't make the La Salle defense pay.
"A win is a win, NU is no pushover team," said DLSU head coach Hans Smit. "They hustle a lot, they're a good team. We're just lucky that they had a mental lapse in the first half."
Fortunately for NU, who sits at five wins, one draw, and six losses for 16 points, they still control the fourth seed.
The win was a big one for De La Salle, who improve to four wins, three draws, and four losses for 16 points, moving ahead of UST for thr fifth spot.
As the season winds down, expect the race for the playoffs to heat up, especially for DLSU, NU, and UST.
