90 minutes wasn't enough to determine a winner between UP and UST.
University of the Philippines moved another step closer to defending their UAAP men's football title after figuring in a scoreless draw against University of Santo Tomas, Thursday afternoon at the Moro Lorenzo Football Field.
The Maroons were aggressive early on, dominating possession and creating a number of chances on goal.
King Miyagi, who had a lot of UP's chances, nearly put the Maroons ahead just before halftime, launching a header that was just a bit wide to the left.
UST started the second half strong, controlling possession early, but momentum shifted to the defending champions late.
While UP's calling card has always been excellent defense, the Growling Tigers also displayed good defending of their own, bannered by keeper Zaldy Abraham, who was responsible for keeping the Maroons from breaching their goal lines.
After 90 minutes, neither team managed to alter the score, with the match ending in a 0-0 stalemate.
"We could have scored two goals in the first 15 minutes," said UP head coach Anto Gonzales. "I think we started the game very well, goal na lang yung kulang."
"I'm very satisfied with the performance of the players," said UST head coach Marjo Allado. "Yung one point na na-gain namin, at least nakatulong pa rin, regarding dun sa number four position."
With the two teams sharing points, UP moves to 25 points on seven wins, four draws, and one loss. They join league-leading Ateneo in clinching a playoffs spot.
UST on the other hand, moves to 14 points on four wins, two draws, and five losses. They're currently in fifth place, behind National University.
