FEU stays alive in semis berth race, sweeps NU

Far Eastern University completed an elimination round head-to-head sweep of National University and kept its Final Four hopes alive.
Far Eastern University breathed new life to its Final Four bid with a morale-boosting, 25-21, 25-21, 25-22, win over the National University Lady Bulldogs Saturday in the 79th UAAP women’s volleyball tournament at the Mall of Asia Arena.
The Lady Tamaraws won its second straight match while handing the Lady Bulldogs back-to-back losses.
FEU tied its victim at 7-6 win-loss record.
To make it to the Final Four, the Morayta-based squad must win its last elims assignment against University of the Philippines on Wednesday to force a possible semis seat playoff.
“Sobrang laking pag-boost ng morale sa team namin ng panalo, especially (ito na rin) ang preparation against UP. Automatic ‘yan, ‘yung performance nila ngayon pwedeng maging (inspiration) ‘yan sa game namin against sa UP,” said FEU assistant coach Arielito Canlas.
Bernadeth Pons smashed 14 attacks in her 16-point performance while Toni Rose Basas gathered 14 markers for the Lady Tams, who made a repeat of its four-set victory over NU in the first round.
Defending champion De La Salle University (11-2) and Ateneo de Manila (10-2) occupied the top two spots in the Final Four and are armed with twice-to-beat advantage.
Other teams still in contention for the last two semis spots are UP and University of Sto. Tomas, who both carry 7-5 slates.
Jaja Santiago finished with 20 points with 18 coming off kills while Jorelle Singh had 11 makers for the Lady Bulldogs, who gave away 27 points off errors.
NU will close the elims in a must-win match on April 8 against UST.
