Ria Meneses’ explosion came at an opportune time with the University of Sto. Tomas Tigresses in dire need of a win to keep their semifinals hopes alive in the 79th UAAP women’s volleyball tournament.
The fourth-year middle blocker redeemed herself from a disappointing outing against De La Salle University the last time out with a monster performance especially in front of the net against the squad that the Tigresses last defeated back in Season 76.
Meneses outblocked the whole University of the Philippines crew in UST’s 25-20, 25-21, 25-16, victory Sunday at the MOA Arena that moved the Espana-based squad a win away from ending a four-year Final Four drought.
At 8-5 win-loss slate at solo third spot, UST can formally clinch a semis spot with a victory against National University on April 8.
It was a block party for the former U-23 national team player when she tallied eight kill blocks in her total of 10 points to frustrate UP, which only had four blocks.
“Siguro grabe lang din ang push sa akin nina coach (Kungfu Reyes) saka ng mga parents ko. Grabe nila ako paalalahan after ng game namin sa La Salle,” said the Season 77 Best Blocker. “Parang lagi nilang pinu-push na huwag panghinaan ng loob. Ilabas mo lang ang natural na laro.”
Meneses only had one point – a service ace - in the Tigresses straight sets loss to the Lady Spikers last Wednesday. Reyes was frustrated with the way Meneses performed that match and gave Meneses a few words.
Meneses took it as a challenge.
“Parang mix na parang pinu-push na parang nada-down,” she said. “Pero mas tinake ko siya na mas nakaka-boost siya kasi malaki ang tiwala sa akin ng coach ko.”
She responded with a huge game, tying Jaja Santiago’s performance in a five-set win over Ateneo de Manila for the season’s most number of blocks by a player in a single game.
And she didn’t even realize that she outperformed the middles of UP.
“Di ko napansin kasi nagi-enjoy kami kanina eh,” said Meneses. “Di ko rin pinapansin ang sariling puntos ko lang. Ang lagi naming iniisip ang score ng buong team.”
Meneses vowed to deliver the same performance when the Tigresses take on the Santiagpo and the Lady Bulldogs.
“Siyempre ipu-push ko rin ang sarili ko na kung sa UP nagawa ko, paano pa doon sa next game sa amin,” she said.
