Ateneo de Manila University easily overpowered University of the East, 25-18, 25-12, 25-10, Sunday and climbed back on top for a share of the lead in the 79th UAAP women’s volleyball tournament at the Mall of Asia Arena.

The Lady Eagles tied archrival De La Salle University with 11-2 win-loss record as Ateneo built its momentum heading into the marquee match against the defending champions Lady Spikers on April 8 at the Big Dome.

Top hitter Jho Maraguinot was rested by Ateneo head coach Tai Bundit in the match that the Lady Eagles controlled from start to finish. The Katipunan-based squad was able to experiment with its rotation as part of its preparation in the much-anticipated rematch with DLSU where the no. 1 seed in the Final Four will be determined.

Kat Tolentino finished with 12 points while Jia Morado scored nine points and dished out 26 excellent sets for Ateneo. Michelle Morente added eight markers.

Seldom-used Jules Samonte, Pongay Gaston and Jamie Lavitoria were given significant playing time by Bundit and combined for six points.

"OK lang naman (na ipinasok ang ibang players and wala si Jho), kasi in training naman we don't just stay with a solid core. Parang coach nmakes it a point to use everyone in training para kahit sino ipasok sa game today (makaka-deliver)," said Morado.

The Lady Warriors dropped its sixth straight defeat for 1-12 slate.

Mary Anne Mendrez scored six points while Shaya Adorador got five markers for UE, which played without head coach Francis Vicente who had to attend his child's graduation.
