University of Sto. Tomas secured at least a semifinals berth playoff after sweeping University of the Philippines.
Ria Meneses and hitter EJ Laure performed solidly to power University of Sto. Tomas to a 25-20, 25-21, 25-16, drubbing of University of the Philippines as the Tigresses secured at least a semifinals berth playoff in the 79th UAAP women’s volleyball tournament Sunday at the Mall of Asia Arena.
The Tigresses snatched their eighth win in 13 games for solo third spot and moved a win away from returning to the first Final Four after missing the cut in the previous four seasons.
"Hindi na kami aasa ngayon sa ibang team at nasa kamay na namin 'yung tsansa namin na makapasoksa Final Four," said Tigresses coach Kungfu Reyes, whose wards will take on National University on April 8 at the close of the elimination round.
Meneses wreaked havoc in front of the net to silence the hitters of UP while Meneses and Cherry Rondina provided the firepower as UST exacted revenge against its first round tormentor.
Laure scattered 15 points while Rondina smashed 13 of her 14 markers from attacks for the Espana-based squad. Meneses was a monster on defense with eight kill blocks in her 10-point production.
The Lady Maroons were taken out of their game early and the Tigresses dictated the outcome of the match in the third set with a 20-9 lead and never looked back.
UP dropped to 7-6 slate in a three-way tie with other semis contenders Far Eastern University and National University.
Diana Carlos finished with eight points to lead the Lady Maroons while Isa Molde and Nicole Tiamzon scored seven each.
