King Miyagi (9) scored the go-ahead goal to push UP past DLSU
A second half goal from King Miyagi sealed the Green Archers' fate, Sunday evening at the Rizal Memorial Stadium, as University of the Philippines beat De La Salle University, 2-1, in UAAP Season 79 men's football action.
While UP has already secured a spot in the postseason, they showed no signs of slowing down, controlling the pace of the match from the get-go.
While the Maroons were the first to get on the board, it was with a bit of help from the Green Archers' Nicko Villacin, who accidentally deflected a JB Borlongan attempt into DLSU's goal in the 16th minute.
Not long after, DLSU got a chance to level the match after UP gave up a foul inside the box, resulting in a penalty chance.
Rookie Paeng Siggaoat was tasked to take the penalty kick, and blasted it through UP keeper Ace Villanueva's hands for the equalizer in the 22nd minute.
Miyagi broke the stalemate in the second half, making good on a pass from skipper Daniel Gadia for the advantage.
The Green Archers had a chance to tie, with Jhoguev Ybañez blasting a shot from near-midfield, only to see his attempt hit the crossbar.
The Maroons held on to the 2-1 win and inched closer to the top seed.
"King said he would score today, and he made good on his promise," said UP head coach Anto Gonzales.
"Second half, there were incremental improvements compared to the first half. I thought we kept the ball better, we made less unforced errors." Gonzales added.
With the win, UP improves to 28 points on eight wins, four draws, and one loss, just a single point behind league-leading Ateneo de Manila.
DLSU on the other hand, drops back down to sixth with 15 points on four wins, three draws, and five losses.
