Desiree Cheng of De La Salle University is ABS-CBN Sports' Player of the Week.
Desiree Cheng made her presence felt for the defending champion De La Salle University as she helped the Lady Spikers inch closer to claiming the top seed in the Final Four.
The third year hitter delivered the much-needed numbers on offense and defense in DLSU’s last two games to earn the nod as ABS-CBN Sports’ Player of the Week.
Cheng averaged 10.5 points in the Taft-based squad’s domination of University of Sto. Tomas and Adamson as the Lady Spikers remained unbeaten in the second round for an 11-2 win-loss record to share the top spot with archrival Ateneo de Manila.
The hitter, who skipped last season’s action because of a knee injury, scored 13 points coming off nine kills, three aces and a kill block in DLSU’s 25-23, 25-22, 25-21, win Wednesday against University of Sto. Tomas.
Cheng also finished with seven excellent receptions against the Tigresses and provided stability to Lady Spikers in the closing frame after top hitter Kim Dy went down with a left ankle sprain early in the third set.
Three days later, Cheng followed it up with eight points including six coming off attacks and four digs, helping middle Majoy Baron on offense as the Lady Spikers crushed the listless Adamson Lady Falcons, 25-13, 25-14, 25-16, last Saturday that kept DLSU’s hold of the lead.
The Lady Spikers extended its winning streak to six and built a huge momentum heading into the marquee end of elims rematch against Ateneo on Saturday where the no. 1 seed in the Final Four is at stake.
Even with Dy expected to return to action, Cheng will remain one of DLSU’s scoring option and a vital cog on floor defense against the Lady Eagles.
Cheng, the second Lady Spiker to get the recognition after Baron, beat teammate Kim Fajardo, Ateneo setter Jia Morado and University of Sto. Tomas’ EJ Laure and Ria Meneses.
