University of the Philippines in a must-win match against a nothing to lose spoiler Adamson University.
University of the Philippines fights for dear life Wednesday when the Fighting Maroons face spoiler Adamson University in a must-win situation to keep their slim Final Four bid alive in the 79th UAAP men’s volleyball tournament at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
Sporting a 5-8 win-loss record, the Fighting Maroons’ fate in the Final Four race is no longer in their hands.
UP must win against the also-ran Falcons in their 10:00 a.m. game that will air live over ABS-CBN S+A Channel 23, ABS-CBN S+A HD Channel 166 and via livestream.
But even if the Diliman-based squad hurdles Adamson, which is on a two-game winning streak - all against teams in contention for the Final Four, the Maroons must pray hard that semifinals-bound Far Eastern University (7-6) defeats University of Sto. Tomas (6-7) on Saturday to force a playoff for the no. 4 seat.
Unbeaten defending champion Ateneo de Manila (13-0) and National University (12-1) occupy the top two spot and are assured of Final Four twice-to-beat advantage.
UP fell into a do-or-die situation after absorbing three straight setbacks, including an 18-25, 25-25, 16-25 defeat at the hands of FEU last Saturday. The Maroons defeated the Falcons in five sets in the first round.
Adamson has been playing the spoilers’ role of late, winning two straight capped by a 25-23, 25-19, 25-17, victory over UST that denied the Tigers the chance to formally clinch the last semis berth last Sunday thus keeping UP’s Final Four hopes alive.
The Falcons and De La Salle University, which will take on University of the East at 8:00 a.m., are tied at 4-9 mark.
The Red Warriors are at the cellar with 1-12 slate.
