Ateneo de Manila University secured the Final Four top seed with four-set demolition of defending champion De La Salle University.
Ateneo de Manila University reasserted its mastery over the defending champion De La Salle University, 12-25, 25-20, 25-21, 25-19, Saturday sans top hitter Jho Maraguinot and clinched the Final Four top spot in the 79th UAAP women’s volleyball tournament at the Big Dome.
The Lady Eagles completed an elimination round head-to-head sweep of their archrivals for a 12-2 win-loss record and forged a Final Four showdown with no. 4 seed Far Eastern University.
Ateneo is armed with a twice-to-beat advantage in the semis.
Michelle Morente, Bea De Leon, Ana Gopico and freshman Jules Samonte delivered the much-needed points and filled the scoring void left by Maraguinot, who was in uniform but sat out the match to rest a nagging right knee injury.
Morente scored 14 points with 12 coming off attacks and provided 15 digs and 17 excellent receptions for the Lady Eagles while De Leon smashed nine kills with four service aces and a kill block for 14 markers.
Samonte scored 10 for Ateneo, which will take on the team that they defeated twice in the elims in five sets in the semis slated after on April 23 at the Mall of Asia Arena.
"Hindi masyado (inexpect na ganito ang panalo). Maganda 'yung nilaro ng team 'yung posisyon ni Jho napunan ni Jules," said Ateneo assistant coach Sherwin Meneses. "So parang parehas lang din yung first six kaso wala si Jho."
The Katipunan-based squad landed at the top spot for the third straight season. Ateneo also defeated DLSU, which ended the Lady Eagles two-year reign last year, in four sets in the first round.
DLSU dropped to 11-3 and absorbed its only loss in the second round.
Kim Dy finished with 15 points, Desiree Cheng had 13 markers while Majoy Baron and Tin Tiamzon scored 11 and 10 points, respectively, for the Lady Spikers, who gave away an atrocious 36 points off errors.
The Taft-based squad will take on University of Sto. Tomas in the other semis pairing armed with a twice-to-beat advantage on April 22 at the Big Dome.
