Birthday boy Roger Gorayeb:
"Nothing to be ashamed of. Still proud of the girls," - NU head coach Roger Gorayeb after season-ending loss to UST

Had things gone Roger Gorayeb's way, the National University women's volleyball head coach would be celebrating his birthday after leading the Lady Bulldogs to a playoff against University of Santo Tomas on Wednesday.

Sadly for Gorayeb, it wouldn't be the case as the Golden Tigresses mounted an epic comeback after being down two sets, to ultimately put an end to the Lady Bulldogs' run in UAAP Season 79.

"Wala eh. Nagkulang eh. Kinapos eh. Nandun naman yung effort ng mga bata, first two sets." A somber Gorayeb said following the match. "Ganun talaga, di natuloy eh. Kahit gaano ka-painful samin 'yun we have to accept it. It's survival eh, yung aming laro, pero deserve ng UST yan kasi di sila umayaw. Naglaro ang mga bata, UST, NU naglaro ng maayos e."

After taking a two set lead, 25-20 and 25-19, the Lady Bulldogs seemed poised to keep their season alive, at least for one more match, In the third set however, momentum began to favor UST, and everything went downhill from there.

Gorayeb attributes the collapse to the Lady Bulldogs losing a little steam in the final three sets.

"Nagrelax nung third set eh. Nawala yung sigla nung first two sets eh. Nung third set biglang nagbago. Nung fourth ayun kinapos tapos nung fifth set sayang na sayang."

Still, Gorayeb, who began handling the Lady Bulldogs midway through Season 77, said there was no reason for him and his team to hang their heads.

"Nothing to be ashamed of. Still proud of the girls," said Gorayeb. "Okay lang yun, wala naman kami dapat ikahiya."

The Lady Bulldogs end their season with a 7-7 record just like last season, and will be missing out on the playoffs for the second straight season.

Looking forward, Gorayeb says that he'll be taking a look at what needs to be adjusted for the next season.

"Di ko masabing experience eh. Pero we should stay more as a team talaga. Reflect lang kung ano yung pagkukulang, kung ano yung dapat baguhin, idagdag at bawasan. It's a good run. Kulang lang talaga ng effort, konting konti pa. Andyan pa naman lahat next year."
