BACKUP. EJ Laure and UST were carried to the finish line by team captain Sisi Rondina.
With University of Sto. Tomas needing two points to complete a come-from-behind victory versus National University on Sunday, erstwhile game-high scorer EJ Laure landed awkwardly and took a little while to get back up.
Right then and there, Golden Tigresses captain Sisi Rondina had no doubt Laure was going to be all right – and more than that, was going to finish the match. “Gets ko si EJ. Kapag mga ganoon talagang sitwasyon, hindi talaga siya aayaw at dun ako talaga bumibilib sa kanya,” she said.
She then continued, “Kasi kahit naman sa training, kahit masakit din balikat niya, alam ko nang hindi siya aayaw.”
While she was sure her teammate was going to keep on playing, Rondina said she also knew someone else should take on the scoring load. “Pero sinabi ko na rin kay ate Alex (Cabanos) na, ‘Sige, tulungan na lang natin si EJ. Bigay mo na lang sa akin, ako na babawi para sa kanya,’” she shared.
From there, the spiker fondly called “Cherry Bomb” had one of the two points that claimed the game and the fourth and final playoff berth for UST.
In the end, the Tigresses edged out the Lady Bulldogs in five sets with Rondina and Laure each accounting for 22 points.
For her part, Laure was nothing but appreciative of her team captain. “Nakakagaan ng pakiramdam kasi siyempre, batchmate ko pa siya tapos alam niya yung capabilities ko at na hindi ako gi-give up,” she expressed.
Now that they have carried the Espana-based school back to the playoffs after four years, all of them are on a high. As Laure put it, “Sobrang nakakatuwa kasi na-achieve na namin yung isang goal namin.”
