Kailangan ‘yan eh. Courtesy resignation ‘yan -- NU head coach Roger Gorayeb
National University head coach Roger Gorayeb tendered his resignation moments after the Lady Bulldogs failed to advance in the Final Four Saturday in a 25-20, 25-19, 22-25, 21-25, 12-15, loss to University of Sto. Tomas in the 79th UAAP women’s volleyball tournament at the Big Dome.
“Kailangan ‘yan eh. Courtesy resignation ‘yan,” said Gorayeb, who came into the team in the middle of Season 77 to replace Dong Dela Cruz.
NU closed the season with a three straight losses and finished with a 7-7 win-loss card tied with University of the Philippines.
The multi-titled mentor brought the Lady Bulldogs in the stepladder semifinals in Season 77 but NU came up short of advancing in the Finals after receiving the boot from De La Salle University.
NU with the core of Myla Pablo, Jaja Santiago and Jorelle Singh during the offseason heading into Season 78 won the V-League Collegiate Conference crown, making the Lady Bulldogs as one of the title contenders.
But the Lady Bulldogs failed to live up to expectations after a shaky season that saw them fall out of the semis roster as they came up with only seven wins in 14 outings.
An exodus of players marred Gorayeb’s preparation of the squad for Season 79 but NU managed to win another V-League Collegiate Conference title that kept the Lady Bulldogs in the radar for a title run.
NU fielded only 11 players this season but opened with three straight wins. However, three defeats in a row and a sudden dip in performance in the crucial last three games in the elims doomed their chance to return in the semis.
The NU management has yet to issue its statement on Gorayeb’s resignation.
“Kung kukunin nila ako syempre tutuloy ko maganda naman,” he said. “Kung gusto nila ako palitan okay lang din naman madami din (naghahangad) d’yan.”
