National University head coach Roger Gorayeb and University of Sto. Tomas mentor Kungfu Reyes found a way to kill time when their scheduled 79th UAAP women’s volleyball tournament started a bit late Saturday at the Big Dome.
The game that was supposed to start at 12:00 noon was delayed by around 48 minutes and the coaches were running out of ideas for their respective squads’ warmup drills.
With time to spare, Gorayeb challenged Reyes to a pickup volleyball game to the delight of the crowd.
Naghaharutan lang naman kami doon,” said Gorayeb, who played as setter for San Sebastian College during his heydays.
Gorayeb teamed up with his assistant coach Edjet Mabbayad while Reyes had his assistant Ian Fernandez as partner.

“Sobrang tagal kasi bago magstart. Hindi na namin alam paano pa kami magpapa-warm up e,” said Reyes, who played as setter before switching to spiker during his collegiate career in UST.
Reyes and Fernandez won the pickup game – all thanks to Gorayeb’s couple of miscues.
Unfortunately, Gorayeb and NU also lost the real match in five sets, 25-0, 25-19, 22-25, 21-25, 12-15, that sent them to an early vacation for the second straight season.
