Carlo Liay (18) helped Ateneo put FEU away, 3-1, in their final UAAP Season 79 men's football elimination match.
Top-seeded Ateneo de Manila University wrapped up the elimination round with a commanding 3-1 victory over Far Eastern University, Thursday afternoon at the Moro Lorenzo Football Field in Ateneo de Manila.
League-leading scorer Jarvey Gayoso scored early for the Blue Eagles, sending a header in from a Rupert Baña cross in the 32nd minute.
The Tamaraws didn't take long to respond, with Dominique Canonigo finding the equalizer in the 37th minute.
Just before halftime, Ateneo regained the lead, courtesy of an impressive strike from Renko Gaudiel in the 43rd minute for a 2-1 lead at haltime.
The Blue Eagles added to their cushion in the 58th minute, sinking a penalty kick to make it a 3-1 lead for the Katipunan-based side.
"I'm happy kasi we ended the eliminations of Season 79 with a win, of course yung players nag-perform," said Ateneo head coach JP Merida. "Pero of course hindi pa tapos, we have to prepare pa for the semifinals, hindi na lang pwedeng mag-end ng ganito na basta-basta."
Ateneo ends with 35 points on eleven wins, two draws, and one loss as they lock up the first seed in the semifinals.
FEU on the other hand, falls to 22 points on six wins, four draws, and four losses.
WIth FEU and UST's results, the Final Four seeding has been finalized, with top-seeded Ateneo taking on fourth-seed University of Santo Tomas, while second-seeded University of the Philippines takes on third-seeded FEU.
