The NU Bulldogs end their season with a 2-1 win over the defending champion UP Maroons.
National University ended their UAAP Season 79 men's football campaign on a high note by defeating defending champions University of the Philippines, 2-1, Thursday evening at the Moro Lorenzo Football Field in Ateneo de Manila.
Playing their last game of the season, the Bulldogs got on the board first, with Mike Arbela scoring in 36 minutes into the match.
King Miyagi found Sebastian Patangan to pull the Fighting Maroons even in the 72nd minute, but it wouldn't take long for the NU to regain the lead, courtesy of a 72nd conversion from Jacob Gomez.
The defending champions wouldn't get another chance to pull even, and NU came away with a win to end the season.
"It's always good to end the season with a win, para there's something we can build on for next season," said NU head coach Mari Aberasturi, who wraps up his first season with the Bulldogs.
"We had our chances, pero hindi lang namin nakuha, pero yun na talaga eh, yun na yung mapiga mo sa players...we just hope na we can build on this next year and improve our standing." added Aberasturi.
The NU Bulldogs will finish at fifth place with 19 points on six wins, one draw, and seven losses, a mere two points behind fourth-seeded University of Santo Tomas. They also improve on their standing after finishing in sixth place last season.
Final Four-bound UP on the other hand, will finish in second place with 28 points on eight wins, four draws, and two losses. The defending champions get ready to take on third-seeded Far Eastern University in the semifinals.
