Desiree Cheng surely gives energy to De La Salle University with her on-court swag.
Michele Gumabao, Aby Marano and Mika Reyes.
These girls are the legendary swag queens of De La Salle University.
They are intimidating and just know how to get under the skin of those on the other side of the net.
Great players that intimidate opponents with their on-court antics while giving the Lady Spikers and their faithful an added boost of energy.
Desiree Cheng could be taking that role after her ‘performance’ Saturday in DLSU's championship berth-clinching 25-14, 25-20, 24-26, 25-13, win against University of Sto. Tomas in the 79th UAAP women’s volleyball Final Four at the Big Dome. The defending champions marched into their ninth straight championship stint.
The third year player received a rain of boos as early as the first set. She was dancing, clapping her hands, trotting and making extra motions to add punctuation on each of her points.
Some fans found it a little too much.
“Alam naman siguro ng lahat ‘yun na part of the game so Ok lang sa akin. Saka sanay naman na ako (sa jeers),” said Cheng, who skipped last year’s competition because of a left knee injury. “Parang mas na-challenge ako sa kanila at mas naging ganado akong maglaro.”
Cheng finished with 11 points, seven coming from the opening set including the set-clinching back-to-back aces.
Asked if she’s the next ‘swag queen’ of DLSU, “No, hindi ko alam. It depends sa game, it depends sa situation.”
But one thing’s for sure, Cheng will be doing more of that in the best-of-three Finals.
“You want ba?” she said. “OK if you guys want, sige go. Hindi joke lang. It depends.”
