"Alam ko, sa isip ko na ipapadyak nya lang yan. Nung nakita kong tumalon siya, sobrang saya ko." - Cherry Rondina on EJ Laure
Eerily similar to how things played out during their knockout match against National University during the last game of the eliminations, University of Santo Tomas open spiker EJ Laure landed awkwardly and sprained her right ankle in the third set of their final four matchup against De La Salle University.
While against NU, Laure just kicked her injury off and toughed it out to help UST get past the Lady Bulldogs, Laure's injury against DLSU appeared to be a little more serious as she had to be helped off the floor.
Seemingly in excruciating pain, and with her father, PBA veteran Eddie Laure by her side, it appeared as if Laure would be done for the night.
That wouldn't be the case, as moments later, Daddy Eddie would be seen taping EJ's ankle up, and the third-year Golden Tigress was back on the floor, helping UST take the third set.
While UST would ultimately, fall to the defending champions in four sets, Laure's show of heart was enough to help will her teammates to steal a set and avoid getting swept.
After the match, UST captain Cherry Rondina shared that she knew that EJ would be back on the floor.
"Hindi ako nagulat," said Rondina. "Alam ko, sa isip ko na ipapadyak nya lang yan. Nung nakita kong tumalon siya, sobrang saya ko."
Initially though, Rondina said that seeing Laure go down again, and in a cruicial point in the match at that, was quite hard to accept.
"Nasaktan ako sa nangyari kay EJ." bared the third-year skipper. "Di ko tanggap na uupo na lang sya sa laro namin. Ayoko ng ganun."
Instead of letting Laure's injury get them down, Rondina rallied her teammates and told them to keep working.
"Yung pag labas ni EJ, pinadama ko na sa teammates na kailangang ibawi sya. Kailangan nating trabahuhin. Pinakita ko sa kanila na hindi tayo basta-basta."
While Rondina, Laure, and the UST Golden Tigresses fell short, their third set was more than anything, a testament to their heart and their will.
If you're a UST fan, knowing that these two will be back in uniform for the next few seasons will be something to look forward to.
