"Nandoon yung gusto niya at willing siya matuto" - Shaq Delos Santos on Remy Palma
For the last two seasons, Far Eastern University leaned on Remy Palma as their team captain, and over those last two seasons, the middle hitter transformed herself into the Lady Tamaraws' emotional leader, especially on court.
In her five seasons in the UAAP, Palma helped the Lady Tamaraws to three consecutive Final Four appearances, including their recently concluded Season 79 campaign, which ended at the hands of finalists Ateneo de Manila.
The end of FEU's season also signalled the end of Palma's UAAP career, and while she'll no longer be suiting up as a player, head coach Shaq Delos Santos says that Palma has potential to be a leader on the sidelines as well.
"Oo merong potential kasi sobrang happy kami na coaching staff kasi once na kinausap namin siya, di naman totally perfect na magagawa niya lahat pero nandoon yung gusto niya at willing siya matuto," Delos Santos said after their loss to Ateneo. He added that Palma's leadership has definitely rubbed off on her younger teammates. "Nagreflect naman sa buong team kasi yung respeto nung lahat ng players, talagang ate siya."
With Palma's departure, Delos Santos says that he expects some of the remaining veterans to step up as on-court leaders.
"Yung isa si [Bernadeth] Pons syempre yung mga susunod sila [Toni] Basas, sila [Heather] Guino-O. Marami naman diyan, yun yung part ng training namin."
So, will we be seeing Coach Remy in the sidelines for FEU next season?
Delos Santos and Palma's responses were unanimous: "Secret."
