It will be a good match and hopefully nga mag-Game 3 -- University of Sto. Tomas coach Kungfu Reyes
If University of Sto. Tomas head coach Kungfu Reyes could have it his way, he hopes that the 79th UAAP women’s volleyball championship best-of-three series between the defending champion De La Salle University and Ateneo de Manila will go the full distance.
In an interview with ABS-CBN News’ Dyan Castillejo, Reyes weighed in his thoughts for the upcoming sixth Finals installment of the storied rivalry starting May 2.
“It will be a good match and hopefully nga mag-Game 3,” said Reyes, who visited the 2017 Palarong Pambansa in San Jose de Buenavista, Antique to look for potential recruits for his Tigresses.
The mentor, whose squad fell short of earning a spot in the Finals after bowing down to DLSU in the Final Four last Saturday, sees the series to go either way with no team holding a clear advantage over the other.
“On the technical side lamang sa tao si Ateneo,” he said. “Pero si La Salle kasi may ipinaglalaban kasi defending champion.”
Reyes pointed out that Ateneo coach Tai Bundit has a full arsenal of talents on his bench led by veterans Jho Maraguinot, Michelle Morente, Bea De Leon and setter Jia Morado.
The Lady Eagles swept the Lady Spikers in their eliminations head-to-head but Reyes said that DLSU will march into battle a different team than it was in its first two matches against Ateneo.
Graduating setter Kim Fajardo will be the key for the Taft-based squad to end a two-game bleeding against its archrival.
“Depende na kung paano ni Kim iikot ang tao niya na nasa loob,” he said.
Fajardo will have the support of Kim Dy, Majoy Baron, Tin Tiamzon, Desiree Cheng and libero Dawn Macandili.
Game 2 of the Finals is on May 6 while Game 3, if necessary, is on May 10. All games will be held at the Big Dome.
