The FEU Tamaraws are back in the UAAP men's football finals
Sophomore striker Rico Andes scored twice to help Far Eastern University get past University of the Philippines, 2-1, Thursday afternoon at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium to dethrone the reigning champions and earn a spot in the UAAP Season 79 men's football finals.
The action was fast-paced early in the match, as 22 minutes in, Andes knocked in a header to give the Tams an early 1-0 lead.
Before FEU could enjoy the advantage however, UP's own sophomore sensation King Miyagi responded instantly to level the match in the 23rd minute.
Andes would break the deadlock once again in the 60th minute to put the former back-to-back champion Tamaraws back ahead midway through the second half.
With their season on the line, UP battled hard looking for an equalizer, and the closest that they would get to pulling even once again would be from an attempt from Christian Lapas in injury time that went wide.
With one last possesion left, FEU did all that they could to prevent any chances from UP to hold on to the 2-1 victory.
"Talagang napaka-ganda ng ibinigay ng team ngayon, nagbunga yung mga pinagpaguran namin sa training, na halos hindi na kami maka-galaw tapos kinabukasan may training na naman," said Andes during the post-match press conference. "Isang malaking challenge para sa aming mga sophomores na mag-contribute ng malaki para mabigyan ng magandang farewell yung seniors namin."
After missing out on the Final Four last season, Andes, Paolo Bugas and the rest of the Tamaraws find themselves back in the men's football finals, their third time in the last four years. (Two of which, they went on to become champions.)
They face Ateneo de Manila, who ousted University of Santo Tomas in the earlier semifinal match.
Ateneo and FEU will battle for the UAAP Season 79 Men's Football crown on Sunday, May 7th, 3:00 PM at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium.
