"Siya yung nagiging inspirasyon ko ngayon, tsaka yung teammates ko." - Paolo Bugas
Far Eastern University's senior midfielder Paolo Bugas approached the media area after their UAAP Season 79 men's football semifinals win over defending champions University of the Philippines with a look of relief on his face.
"UP ang pinaka-mahirap na kalabanin eh," Bugas said, still trying to catch his breath.
Moments later, Bugas, now seated and fielding questions from the media along with coach Vince Santos and teammate Rico Andes, was asked how good it felt to be back in the Finals, especially after missing out on the Final Four just a season earlier.
"Actually, motivated ako kasi andiyan yung mother ko eh," said Bugas, before being overcome with emotion.
"Nag-sakripisyo sya, nag-leave siya sa work niya para maka-nood ng semifinals," Bugas continued, overcome with emotion and trying to speak through his tears. "Hindi naman siya nag-eexpect na makaka-abot kami sa finals."
Bugas' mom Arphel, who's based in Davao, took time off from work to make it to the semifinals, considering that it could have been her son's final UAAP game.
Instead, she saw her son help lead his team to their third finals appearance in four years.
"Siya yung nagiging inspirasyon ko ngayon, tsaka yung teammates ko."
On Sunday, Paolo Bugas will be playing his final UAAP game, in the Finals against Ateneo de Manila. If things go his way, he'll be ending his UAAP career as a three-time champion in men's football.
And while momma Arphel won't be there anymore to watch live, win or lose, she will no doubt be supporting her son all the way.
