Sabi ko nga sana ‘yung ibang breaks mapunta naman sa amin -- Ateneo assistant coach Sherwin Meneses
With their season and championship hopes already hanging by a thread, Ateneo de Manila assistant coach Sherwin Meneses hopes that the breaks of the game this time will go their way.
The Lady Eagles fight for survival against archrival defending champion De La Salle University Saturday in Game 2 of the best-of-three 79th UAAP women’s volleyball Finals series at the Big Dome.
Game time is at 4:00 p.m. and will air live on ABS-CBN S+A Channel 23, ABS-CBN S+A HD Channel 166 and via livestream.
Down, 0-1, in their sixth straight championship showdown, the Katipunan-based squad look to drag the series to a do-or-die Game 3 on May 10.
Ateneo dropped a painful 25-21, 27-29, 22-25, 20-25 loss in the series opener last Tuesday in a match that the Lady Eagles faithful believed went on DLSU’s side after a couple of breaks in the second set.
From there the Lady Spikers rallied to win the match and moved a step closer to their 10th crown overall.
“Sabi ko nga sana ‘yung ibang breaks mapunta naman sa amin,” said Meneses.
Trailing, 17-22, in the second, DLSU blasted six straight points coming off service line gems from Kim Fajardo and a string of errors by Ateneo to take the lead, 23-22. The Lady Spikers took the set point, 24-23, but DLSU middle Aduke Ogunsaya sent her service straight to the net for a deuce.
Ateneo had three chances to close the set with its last at 27-26 from a kill block by Bea De Leon. Ogunsanya answered with a quick attack before DLSU closed the extended set to even the match, 1-1.
Meneses said that from there Ateneo’s morale dipped but he and the Lady Eagles remain positive that they can even the series.
“Sobra, sobrang malaking effect yun kasi magto-2-0 down, pero breaks of the game lang ‘yun eh,” he said. “Hindi naman sinasadya siguro."
“Breaks lang yun, breaks,” he added. “Kung doon kami natalo eh di okay lang.”
All Ateneo can do now is to bring their A-game and live up to their heartstrong mantra.
“Siyempre Finals yan eh. Sabi nga natin, kahit ako sinasabi ko, Finals ‘yan. Champion team pareho. So sino mabuhayan, lamang dyan. Kung sino ang maganda ang momentum, lamang,” said Meneses.
