Without a doubt, Desiree Cheng worked her tail off to become a big part of De La Salle University’s second straight crown in the UAAP Women’s Volleyball Tournament.
Skipping all of last year due to a knee injury, the 20-year-old came back with a vengeance in Season 79.
Cheng saved her best for last as her all-around brilliance through two games in the championship round helped the Lady Spikers upend archrival Ateneo de Manila University.
For all her trouble, the open spiker was recognized as the Finals MVP.
Along with her personal reasons, Cheng also apparently got an extra boost just in time for the Finals – an extra boost in the form of Green Archers’ team captain Kib Montalbo.
The basketball champion was present in the venue for the eventual volleyball champions in both games.
It was in Game 2, however, that Montalbo truly showed his all-out support for Cheng.

To after the game:
Asked about his eventful day last Sunday, DLSU’s fifth-year swingman answered, “Wala naman. Support lang.”
And teased if he thought if his presence had something to do with the Finals MVP’s inspired play, Montalbo responded, “Sana… Hopefully… Ata.”
What the Bacolod native is sure of, however, is that he now has an inspiration in the form of Cheng. “Siyempre. Inspiration sa akin,” he said, shortly but succinctly.
Pressed on the matter, Montalbo said the two of them are not in a relationship – not yet, at least. As he put it, “We just started talking, pero wala pa.”
