Safe to say, UAAP 79 Rookie of the Year Aljun Melecio is ready and raring for his encore in his sophomore season.
That much was evident in the recently-concluded 2017 BLIA Cup University Basketball Tournament where the pointman remained to be a key cog in De La Salle University’s perfect run to the championship.
Inside the last two minutes of their Finals matchup with France’s Lyon, the Green Archers were under siege before Melecio put forth another one of his highlight heartbreakers.
The 18-year-old went left to right behind his back and then returned the ball to his left with a crossover.
With his feet unable to keep up, Frenchman Lucas Duthu was sent stumbling. “Nagulat talaga ako sa nangyari. ‘Di ko in-expect na ganun mangyayari,” he told ABS-CBN Sports on Wednesday.
Unfortunately, Melecio muffed on his triple try. “Sayang ‘di pumasok yung tira. Masyado akong na-excite e,” he said.
He more than made up for it not long after, however, as another triple try – sans the ankle-breaker – put the game away once and for all for DLSU.
Melecio and the UAAP’s defending champions went undefeated in the tournament held in Kaohsiung, Taiwan.
DLSU duked it out with varsity teams from China, France, and the USA and came out on top in each and every one of their five games.
UAAP MVP Ben Mbala was hailed as tournament Most Valuable Player while Ricci Rivero was recognized as tournament Most Excellent Player.
With another title under their belt, the Green Archers are back home as they gear up for the UAAP wars in September.
