NU and Jarin happy to be ‘number one for a week’

WINNER, WINNER. J-Jay Alejandro and NU are hoping that Jamike Jarin's history of winning rubs off on them.
Jamike Jarin wasted no time in claiming his first win as a head coach in the UAAP.
Guiding National University to an 86-69 rout of University of the East, Jarin simply continued his winning ways from his time in San Beda College and even Ateneo de Manila High School.
“It feels good that we won,” the beaming Jarin said in his post-win interview.
He then continued, “We’re just very happy that we got the win on opening day. It’s always hard to play the opening.”
Indeed, his UAAP Seniors debut went off with just a few hitches as he drew contributions from everybody from J-Jay Alejandro to Dave Wilson Yu.
As such, Jarin said that having scored a season-opening win, the Bulldogs have made themselves the pacesetters of the league – in the earlygoing, at the very least. “For two hours, we could call ourselves number one. After two hours, we’ll be tied for number one,” he said.
He then continued, “Tomorrow, two teams will win again, but we’re still tied for number one! At least, we got number one for a week.”
After their victory versus Adamson University later in the day, Ateneo tied NU atop the leaderboard.
However, the Bulldogs’ second game of the season is scheduled a week from now – meaning they will be undefeated and therefore somewhere near the top of the standings until then.
Turning serious, however, the one-time NCAA champion coach downplayed insinuations that he has a tried and tested recipe for success – having won as mentor of the Ateneo High, San Beda, and now, NU. “Ako, I’m just blessed. Sabi nila, yung system I run has been very effective since my time in high school. Everybody got it all wrong,” he said.
He then continued, “Swerte ako sa mga player na nako-coach-an ko, swerte ako sa mga programang pinupuntahan ko. I’m just lucky I was part of Ateneo, San Beda, and now, NU.”
