SURPRISE. Kib Montalbo was ruled "questionable." but eventually ended up playing in DLSU's season-opener.
Just five days ago, De La Salle University’s Kib Montalbo was ruled questionable for their first matchup in the season on Sunday.
From then until now, he was feeling the effects of the viral illness. “Nakapag-practice na ako, pero for only three days. ‘Di ako makagalaw masyado kasi every four hours, may lagnat ako,” he said.
And yet, Montalbo was suited up and then saw action as the Green Archers took on new-day rival Far Eastern University. “Sabi nga ng doctor, questionable, pero sabi ko, maglalaro talaga ako kahit anong nangyari,” he said.
He then continued, “Sabi naman ng team, tantyahin ko kung kaya ko talaga, pero sabi ko, maglalaro ako kasi as leader of this team, kailangan nila ako rito. Kahit ‘di ako makalaro, okay tapos pag binunot at palaruin, mas okay.”
The graduating guard did more than just play, contributing 12 points, four rebounds, three assists, two steals, and his usual defense in 20 minutes of action.
Head coach Aldin Ayo was nothing but appreciative of the heart showed by his team leader. “Isipin niyo, dehydrayed yan, galing sa dextrose, hindi 100 percent. Hindi mo matatawaran yung ugali ng bata na pag kailangan siya ng team, nandoon siya,” he said.
Still, Montalbo was the first to acknowledge that he is far from full health. “Wala pa ako sa kundisyon kasi kanina, puro ako oxygen. Mabilis ako mapagod,” he said.
He then continued, “Bumigay na nga sa fourth quarter yung legs ko kasi pagod. Pero I’m good.”
