BIG WIN. Last year's also-ran FEU bested last year's runner-up DLSU to start the season.
It has been three years since Far Eastern University got off to a strong start in the season.
That all changed now in the UAAP 80 Women’s Basketball Tournament.
Banking on big-time blitz in the first quarter, the Lady Tamaraws got the better of injury-riddled De La Salle University, 70-62, on Sunday at the MOA Arena.
Little-known Valerie Mamaril scored all but four of his 12 points in the first as FEU built up a 25-15 lead at the end of the quarter.
The Lady Tamaraws would not look back from there en route to their first season-opening win since Season 77. “Sobrang saya dahil nakuha namin yung first game. First time namin since 2014,” team captain Precious Arellado said.
It was a much welcome confidence booster for FEU which placed seventh a season ago with a 3-11 record.
Isabel Balleser and Arellado topped the scoring column with 16 and 15 points, respectively.
Still, it was a gallant stand for the Lady Archers who played without ace scorer Camille Claro as well as bigs Susan Al-Mohamen and Benette Revillosa. All three are out for the season due to injury.
In Claro’s place, Ana Castillo shouldered the scoring load with 21 points all from threes.
Joehanna Arciga also added 17 markers of her own which still weren’t enough to prevent the runners-up from last season from suffering a setback to start the season.
