SETUP MAN. Ricci Rivero's assist to kuya Prince sealed the deal in DLSU's rise to 2-0.
Everybody knows Ricci Rivero could soar and then score.
Only a few know, however, that the second-year star is being challenged by his coaches to prove he can do much more.
“Every time, every game, kinakausap ako nila coach. Sobrang motivation binibigay nila sa akin,” he shared. “May mga binibigay silang test sa akin na kailangan kong i-prove na kaya ko. Sinasabi rin naman nilang they trust me enough na kaya ko.”
Apparently, one of those tests is to use his own light to let his teammates shine. “Lately, I’m trying to make my teammates look good. Yun naman yung magiging pinaka-best na magagawa ng isang player kasi hindi lahat, looking forward na gawin yun,” Rivero shared.
He then continued, “Siyempre ang lahat, gusto, ikaw yung on top so isa sa mga test sa akin to help my teammates look good. Yun ang magde-determine na nag-mature na ako.”
Stepping up in the face of his coaches’ challenge, the 19-year-old proved his worth when De La Salle University needed it the most on Saturday.
With the Green Archers clinging to a three-point lead against National University with under 30 ticks to go, Rivero penetrated into the paint and jumped for what appeared to be a short stab.
Only, it wasn’t a short stab as he dropped the ball to his kuya Prince who was open right below the ring.
That brotherly connection proved to be the knockout blow that sealed the deal in DLSU’s back-to-back wins.
For the former NCAA Juniors MVP, he was just doing his job. “Sabi nga ni coach, don’t look for your shot, just wait for the game to come to you. Yun nga, nag-stick talaga sa mind ko yung don’t look for your shots,” he said.
He then continued, “Sabi nga nila, mas magiging magaling kang player if mapapagaling mo yung teammates mo.”
Indeed, not only did Rivero make a teammate look good, he made his brother look good.
