With De La Salle University plagued by injury, University of the East is now the closest challenger to National University’s throne in the UAAP 80 Women’s Basketball Tournament.

And after a season-opening defeat, the Lady Warriors now look the part, going on a win run at the expense of hapless University of the Philippines, 52-42, on Sunday at the Araneta Coliseum.

Playing their third game in a week, the girls of head coach Aileen Lebornio still showed much sense of urgency in this one.

Bienca Ramos and Joyce Francisco provided a big boost, conniving for all but four in UE’s 19-point third quarter that increased a three-point cushion into a 48-31 lead heading into the final frame. “Nung third quarter, buti nag-respond sila sa sinabi ko at nakuha na namin gusto namin,” Lebornio said.

Love Sto. Domingo then hammered down the final nail in the coffin and eventually ended with a 15-point, 17-rebound double-double. Ramos and Francisco also contributed 12 markers apiece.

Lebornio’s defense was stout as always, limiting the Lady Maroons into an abysmal 21 percent shooting.

And so, after falling to NU in their first assignment, the Lady Warriors are now on a two-game win run.

They are now in three-way tie for third after erstwhile undefeated Ateneo de Manila University suffered its first setback in the season.

Valerie Mamaril and Precious Arellado scored 16 and 15 points, respectively, and Far Eastern University made another statement, taking down the Lady Eagles, 64-58.

Katrina Guytingco’s back-to-back hits kept things interesting for Ateneo in the last 20 seconds before Mamaril kept them at bay once and for all by converting three charities.

“At least, meron na kaming help ngayon kasi si Arellado lang last year e. Nag-improve na rin talaga yung Mamaril,” head coach Bert Flores said after his girls bounced back onto a 2-1 standing.

Also at 2-1 are the Lady Eagles who were led by Hazelle Yam’s 20 points.
