Kawawa si coach kasi lahat sa kanila ‘yung bintang pero kami naman ‘yung naglalaro eh -- Regie Basibas defending head coach Boy Sablan
Players get all the credit for every win. Coaches take the blame on losses.
University of Sto. Tomas mentor Boy Sablan gets all the flak as victory continues to elude the Tigers in the 80th UAAP men’s basketball tournament.
After another defeat Wednesday courtesy of National University, 84-94, at the MOA Arena that dropped UST to 0-3 record, Sablan found a defender in Regie Basibas.
Basibas knew that the proud UST community just won’t take their disappointing start quietly but he stressed that the blame shouldn’t be directed solely on Sablan.
“Naaawa nga po ako sa mga coaches kapag natatalo talaga. Kawawa si coach kasi lahat sa kanila ‘yung bintang pero kami naman ‘yung naglalaro eh,” said Basibas, who had a breakout game with 23 points off the bench before fouling out with three minutes left.
The Espana-based squad had a better field goal percentage 43.75% (35-of-80) compared to the Bulldogs’ 34.09% (30-of-88) and outrebounded NU, 59-46, but the Tigers’ 29 turnovers that their rival converted into 23 points was just too much.
UST even held a 76-73 lead early in the fourth quarter only to fizzle out in the end with Basibas and Jordan Sta. Ana, who had 14 markers, fouling out.
“Tulad kanina, naawa ako kay coach kasi ayaw niya talaga matalo eh, gusto talaga manalo, kaya naawa talaga ako sa coach naming,” said Basibas.
With still four assignments remaining in the first round, Basibas and the rest of the Tigers remained optimistic of their campaign.
“Para sa amin naman po, di naman kami nawawalan ng pag-asa kasi lumalaban naman po kami,” he said. “Nadidikit naman po namin ‘yung lamang. Laban lang kami para manalo kami.”
