KONTRA PELO. Paul Desiderio has no answers for his onetime team captain in Ron Dennison.

It has been six years since the University of the Philippines won against Far Eastern University in the UAAP.

Meaning that, in turn, for all of their playing careers in the foremost collegiate league in the country, Fighting Maroon Paul Desiderio is winless against Tamaraw Ron Dennison.

Without a doubt, that’s an oft-repeated topic for conversations between the couple of Cebuanos who go way back.

The two of them were teammates for one year in the University of the Visayas High School.

And Desiderio has not only been winless when it comes to the final score, he is also yet to get something positive out of their head-to-head matchups.

In the last two seasons, he has averaged 12.33 points in 31.7 percent shooting with Dennison shadowing him.

That was yet again the case in State U’s 59-78 loss to FEU on Sunday where their main man was limited to only nine points in 33 percent shooting to go along with two turnovers. “’Di ko napaghandaan si Ron,” he lamented afterward.

For reference, heading into the game, Desiderio had been averaging 21 points including 3.5 triples, 7.3 rebounds, 1.8 assists, and 2.8 turnovers.

For his part, the King Maroon did nothing but acknowledge his former teammate’s defensive prowess. Asked if the latter stopped him, the former answered, “Oo. Oo. Magaling talaga dumepensa si Ron, Alam niya lahat ng galaw ko. Alam niya. Alam niya.”

He then continued, “Nahihirapan talaga ako sa kanya. Magaling tapos yung effort, nandun pa.”

And it wasn’t just on defense that Dennison punished is onetime junior. “Alam kong dinedepensahan niya rin ako so parang ni-challenge ko rin yung sarili ko. Kaya nasu-shoot ko rin ang tira ko kasi confident ako,” he said after scoring 16 points on 47 percent shooting.

For his part, Desiderio said he’s not surprised that there’s much more to the known lockdown defender. “Hindi ako nasu-surprise kasi magaling talaga siya e. Kumpyansa lang nawala sa kanya tapos ngayon, bumabalik na,” he said after his personal defense also proved to be not up to par.

Dennison seeks to re-assert his mastery while Desiderio seeks to break free when the two of them go at it again in the looming second round.
