Sablan: ‘Next year, UST will be one of best teams in UAAP’
NOT YET. UST head coach Boy Sablan said the triumvirate of Steve Akomo, Marvin Lee, and Jordan Sta. Ana will comprise the core of one of the best teams in the league for next year.

University of Sto. Tomas had its best chance for a first win against fellow winless team University of the East on Sunday.

Alvin Pasaol had other plans, however, and lifted the Red Warriors to a 96-91 triumph over the Tigers.

And so, with the loss, the Espana-based squad ended the first round of the UAAP 80 Men’s Basketball Tournament without a win – their worst start to the season since 1994.

And so, with the winless first round, they now boast of a 3-18 record under head coach Boy Sablan.

Still, the mentor chooses to look at things glass half-full. As he put it, “We lost by 15 points, pero 17 points down, humabol na naman kami. Every game, we keep on coming back kahit ilan ang lamang (ng kalaban).”

He then continued, “The fighting spirit of the boys are there already.”

Indeed, UST put up good fights against the University of the Philippines, Adamson University, Ateneo de Manila University, and now, UE.

For Sablan, that just means they just have to work on the mental aspect of the game. “Hindi ko pwedeng sisihin yung players ko kasi they are doing their job. Yung improvement lang na sinasabi namin lagi is maturity,” he said.

He then continued, “These are players na ngayon pa lang nagkaroon ng experience maglaro sa UAAP.”

And when that maturity comes, the second-year shot-caller believes the Tigers will be a force to reckon with. “I’m positive that next year, these guys will be one of the best teams in the UAAP. Si Jeepy (Faundo) lang mawawala so this will be an intact lineup next year,” he shared.

Without a doubt, a wiser triumvirate of Steve Akomo, Marvin Lee, and Jordan Sta. Ana can only lead to better things.

For now, however, Sablan said they will just be taking anything and everything as learnings. “Hopefully, our setbacks will inspire us to improve more,” he expressed.
