BIG BOOST. DLSU will have its full arsenal of weapons when Season 79 Rookie of the Year takes the floor again sooner than later.
For the first time since being confined in the hospital, Aljun Melecio made an appearance for De La Salle University.
The Season 79 Rookie of the Year was on the Green Archers’ bench as they took on their archrival Ateneo de Manila University on Sunday.
He, however, was in street clothes.
And so, Melecio was a mere spectator as the defending champions fell to the Blue Eagles, 76-75. “After ng pagkatalo, gusto ko na makalaro agad, gusto ko nang magbihis para makatulong man lang. Gusto ko nang bumalik as soon as possible kasi sobrnag helpless ako kanina,” he told reporters afterward.
More than a week ago, he was hospitalized due to what was initially diagnosed as a viral illness but was later found out to be dengue. Since then, he has missed three games for DLSU.
Now, the scoring dynamo said he is good to go. “Okay naman ako. Cleared na ako to play, pero yung conditioning ko, kailangan pang ihabol kasi mahirap biglain yung katawan,” he said.
While he wasn’t able to get back just in time for the rivalry game, he said they are penciling a return in the Green Archers’ first game of the second round. “Hinahabol namin Wednesday. If ever, sabi ni coach, limited muna minutes, pero sana makalaro na,” he said, referring to their matchup with Far Eastern University at the Araneta Coliseum.
Whatever happens then, Melecio said he will be raring and ready. As he put it, “Magpa-practice pa lang ako ulit with the team, pero individually, nagpa-practice na ako.”
