Desiderio, Manzo try to summon ‘Never say die’ spirit for UP
FAST AND FURIOUS. Jun Manzo and Paul Desiderio are far from done making things happen for UP.
Paul Desiderio and Jun Manzo looked… different… last Sunday.
Going golden up top together, the University of the Philippines’ main men has yet another proof of their good old friendship.
Call them the Bisaya Blondes.
More than a fashion statement, however, the Fighting Maroons were apparently channeling some sort of spirit – some sort of spirit that can do so much to uplift their team’s morale. “Nagpapauso lang kami ni Jun. ginaya lang namin sina kuya Mark tsaka si kuya Jayjay,” Desiderio shared.
The King Maroon was referring to Mark Caguioa and Jayjay Helterbrand who once rocked blonde hairstyles in their heyday as “The Fast and the Furious” for Ginebra.
And now, Diliman has its own summoners for the Gin Kings’ famed “Never say die” attitude. “Ako si Caguioa, siya si Helterbrand, 'Never say die' na 'to talaga, gaw,” Desiderio added.
If the two Cebuanos can look the part and then play the part of Caguioa and Helterbrand, State U can indeed hope that their squad can do better than their 3-4 record in the first round.
And along with doing their best impression of “The Fast and The Furious,” Manzo also said their matching ‘dos represent that from here on out, everybody can expect a more determined UP. “Ang tema rin namin is Super Saiyan kasi kailangan beast mode kami ngayon,” he said, talking about the superhuman characters from Dragon Ball Z whose hair goes golden when they go all-out.
Although the debut of their ‘dos didn’t go as planned, Desiderio and Manzo are confident that things will turn around for the Fighting Maroons sooner than later. “Sige lang. Marami pa namang laro,” the former said.
State U head coach Bo Perasol could only agree with his Bisaya Blondes. “We could’ve been 5-2 right now instead of 3-4. One game (against Adamson University) was (decided) last two seconds and the other one (against National University) turned around a minute and 30,” he shared.
He then continued, “Naniniwala akong it could’ve gone either way and naniniwala akong we could’ve done better. We’re still hopeful na sa second round, itong 5-2, ito na dapat gagawin namin sa second round.”
Never say die, UP.
