Undone by great defense in the decisive inbound the last time around, De La Salle University turned the tables on Wednesday at the Araneta Coliseum.
Ricci Rivero’s game-long brilliance coupled with Andrei Caracut’s heads-up play in the dying moments spurred the Green Archers past very game Far Eastern University, 75-73, and all the way back into the winner’s circle in the UAAP 80 Men’s Basketball Tournament.
Rivero put on a show from start to finish with a total of 20 points, five steals, and four assists, but it was Caracut’s interception of the Tamaraw’s final inbound that sealed the deal in the defending champions’ rise to 6-2.
Just three days earlier, DLSU was at the wrong end of an inbound gone awry when Kib Montalbo’s pass was tipped by Matt Nieto. Seconds later, the latter’s free throws gave the win to Ateneo de Manila University.
Now, however, the Green Archers made sure they were at the right end of an inbound gone awry. As such, they also made sure they weren’t going to experience their first losing skid in the season.
In the end, Caracut had seven points while Ben Mbala posted an 18-point, 17-rebound double-double.
For FEU, Kenneth Tuffin and Hubert Cani topped the scoring column with 14 and 13 points, respectively. Unable to execute their final play, however, they fall to 4-4, tied for the fourth spot with the University of the Philippines.
