Manong Derrick on Alvin Pasaol: I knew he’s gonna be a star
BANG! BANG! Now in his second season, Alvin Pasaol has taken the UAAP by storm.

Alvin Pasaol is a bad, bad man.

His smiling face may not look like it, his wide frame may not seem as such, but he is a bad, bad man.

“He knows when to fool around. Actually, it’s not fooling around, it’s more of having dun, ‘di ba,” head coach Derrick Pumaren told reporters. “I think that’s the right term, but he knows when to get serious. He knows when he has to get down to business, when to play.”

Don’t believe us or “Manong”?

Then let Pasaol’s numbers sway you – 49 points against De La Salle University, 32 points against University of Sto. Tomas, 11 points against National University, 22 points against Adamson University, and 32 points against the University of the Philippines.

Through that stretch, he has led University of the East to a 3-2 record.

And that stretch is exactly what the Red Warriors recruited him for. “Happy-go-lucky siya, pero he is the leader of the team. That is what I projected when I recruited him,” Pumaren said.

He then continued, “I know that he’s gonna be a star in the UAAP.”

Of course, the veteran mentor knew that his prized prospect from Davao needed some sort of adjustment as a rookie a year ago. As he put it, “Last year, I wasn’t really expecting too much from him because I knew that merong period of adjustment. He’s a sensation in Davao, pero siyempre, UAAP is a lot different.”

And so, Pasaol’s per game counts a season ago were 11 points and 5.4 rebounds.

Now in his second season, he is better than ever.

On offense.

And also on defense.

And this is far from the end of it. “We have to condition his mind that 49 is not (yet done), na tapos na, na boundary na siya,” “Manong” said, referring to Pasaol’s milestone mark against the Green Archers.

As fate would have it, the Red Warriors’ next assignment is DLSU. Asked if he’s gonna put up 50 points this time around, he answered, “’Di ko lang alam. ’Di ko talaga alam. Kailangan ko lang mas dikdikan pa kasi La Salle e kaya kailangan lumaban ulit.”
