RUNWAY READY. A whole new side of "Manong" Derrick Pumaren is now being seen.
Derrick Pumaren has looked, well, different in the UAAP 80 Men’s Basketball Tournament.
Long known as a strict disciplinarian, the University of the East head coach has looked carefree even as he and his team are far from legitimate contention.
It must have something to do with the clothes.
Indeed, the seasoned tactician has looked much younger than his age – which, to this day, is unbeknownst to many.
Asked about his game attires, Pumaren gamely answered reporters, “Para ‘to sa mga players. You know, as I’ve told the boys nung game sa UST, this is the start for the season namin.”
He was referring to their matchup with University of Sto. Tomas nearly three weeks ago which eventually ended as the Red Warriors’ first win in the season. “We have to have swag and I have to be the one to set the tone,” he continued through chuckles.
From then, he has trotted out these game attires:
The suddenly trendy mentor went on to say that it was main man Alvin Pasaol who influenced his newfound fashion sense. “Hindi naman fashion statement ‘to. Pagiging bata sa mga bata,” he said.
He also added, “Nahahawa ako kay Alvin.”
As it turns out, it really has been Pasaol who has been urging his head coach to be a little bit more carefree. “Siyempre, diba kailangan din ni manong bumata. Sinasabihan ko nga siya talaga para bumata siya,” he told reporters.
Clearly, Pumaren and Pasaol share a special bond as the former had said of the latter, “Parang anak ko na.”
To this, the King Warrior responded, “Medyo mas mature kasi ako mag-isip so parang same kami ni “manong.” Dahil dun, nagkakaintindihan kami agad.”
