Defending three-time champion National University bucked the ejection of coach Pat Aquino in the payoff period to beat Ateneo de Manila University, 60-49, for its 59th straight win now in the UAAP Season 80 Women's Basketball Tournament on Saturday at the MOA Arena.
The Lady Bulldogs ended the game on a 9-0 run as Rhena Itesi scored five in the final 1:16 to improve to 11-0 in the season.
Aquino was tossed out in the final 3:38 due to two consecutive technical fouls with NU only leading by five points, 49-44.
The Lady Eagles were still very much alive under the last two minutes, only down 49-51, but could buy a bucket late in the game, allowing the Lady Bulldogs to pull away.
Congo's Itesi had 17 points and 13 rebounds while Ria Nabalan added 12 points, six boards, two assists, and two steals for NU.
Meanwhile, Love Sto. Domingo came through with 26 points and 23 rebounds as University of the East nipped Far Eastern University in overtime, 63-61, to tie University of Sto. Tomas in second place.
The Lady Warriors joined the Tigresses at 9-2, making the race for the twice-to-beat semifinals bonus too close to call.
Despite the loss, their sixth in 11 contests, the Lady Tamaraws remained in fourth spot. FEU is still ahead by a full game over Adamson University (4-7) in the chase for the last semis berth.
Ateneo, meanwhile, fell to 3-8.
