Today, Paul Desiderio had Ron Dennisonís number
I KNOW YOU. Paul Desiderio finally won against Ron Dennison in the UAAP.
The University of the Philippines, with Paul Desiderio in the lead, has not won against Far Eastern University in the UAAP.
Desiderio has been at the losing end in all three tries he has had against the Tamaraws.
Much of that has to do with the presence of Ron Dennison who has frustrated the King Maroon into averages of 12.3 points in a combined 13-for-41 shooting from the field. “High school pa lang kasi, magkasama na kami kaya alm ko na ang mga galaw niya. Pamilyar na talaga ako sa mga ginagawa niya,” the former said of the latter.
Dennison and Desiderio were teammates for one year in the University of the Visayas High School and even then, the hard-nosed guard said he had his junior’s number. “(Dati pa), na-stop ko na siya. Noon hanggang ngayon, alam ko galaw niya, alam ko tendency niya,” he said.
And so, Desiderio’s UP has not won against Dennison’s FEU.
That all came to an end on Saturday in the biggest way possible.
Yes, that’s a video of Desiderio’s game-winning triple over the outstretched arms of Dennison. Asked what was going through his mind then, he answered, “’Di ko masabi e. Nasa isip ko lang na panalo o tabla.”
Not only did the junior make good on the game-winner and, of course, make good on the win in the game, he also dropped 15 points on his senior.
And it wasn’t just on offense that the King Maroon came out on top of the longest-tenured Tamaraw. As head coach Bo Perasol put it, “Paul also made sure na babawi siya kay Dennison with regards to defense. Aside dun sa ginawa niya sa endgame, he was able to limit Dennison to just nine points.”
Indeed, Dennison only had nine points in 30.8 percent shooting to go along with six turnovers in the loss. For reference, his per game counts coming into the contest were 12.4 points in 48.6 percent shooting to go along with 2.6 turnovers.
And so, Desiderio was nothing but glad at how his overall effort played out. “Ako naman yung ‘Dennison stopper,’” he kidded with reporters.
Turning serious, he then continued, “Ang mindset ko talaga ngaoyn, kailangan ko talaga siya bawian kasi lagi na lang akong dehado sa kanya.”
For his part, FEU’s leader had no problems acknowledging that today, at the very least, his junior back in UV had his number. “Maganda rin yung ginawa niya. Pinaghandaan niya rin ako,” he said.
As for the game-winner? Dennison said he did his best – but perhaps, it just wasn’t enough this time around. “Maganda naman depensa ko sa kanya, pero yun nga, na-shoot lang talaga. ‘Di ko rin namang matawag na tsamba yun kasi yun naman talaga yung tira niyang hinahanap,” he said.
He then continued, “Sa dami nang tinira niya, dun pa niya ako na-shootan sa last. Para akong nahulugan ng mundo.”
Here’s to hoping that somehow, some way, we will still get Dennison versus Desiderio in the future.
