Hindi na po ako maglalaro, personal family matters po (ang reason) -- Ria Meneses
Ria Meneses cited personal reasons in her decision to forego her final year with University of Sto. Tomas.
The Tigresses face an uphill climb in their campaign for the 80th UAAP women’s volleyball tournament slated to open three months from now after losing a vital cog at the middle.
Talking to reporters in the 2017 Philippine Superliga Grand Prix’s “Spike on Tour” in Bacolod City, the Petron player confirmed that she left the team but will continue with her studies in the Espana-based university.
“Hindi na po ako maglalaro, personal family matters po (ang reason),” said Meneses.
The UAAP Season 77 Best Blocker courteously declined to explain further her reasons of leaving the squad, which is looking for a second straight Final Four appearance and an end to an eight-year title drought.
Without the former U-23 national team member, the Tigresses will bank on veterans Sisi Rondina, Dimdim Pacres and EJ Laure.
Skipper Shanen Palec and Christine Francisco will need to step up at the middle to fill the void left by Meneses come UAAP. The duo did a great job recently as they led UST to its second straight UniGames conquest in Dumaguete recently.
Aside from Meneses, UST also lost seasoned players Pam Lastimosa, Alex Cabanos and Chloe Cortez, who consumed all their playing eligibility last season.
The Tigresses are building up for the UAAP wars by joining the PSL Grand Prix. The team management is also currently busy beefing up its rosters with good recruits and is close to landing a Fil-foreign player.
