STILL ROARING.

University of Sto. Tomas’ return to relevance continues in the UAAP 80 Women’s Basketball Tournament.

Leaning on Anjel Anies’ strong showing as well as Sai Larosa’s steady endgame, the Tigresses took care of business against Far Eastern University, 86-72, on Sunday at the Araneta Coliseum.

Anies poured in nine of her 24 points in the final frame while Larosa pounded in all of her 10 points in the same timeframe to make sure the girls from Espana came out on top of the do-or-die matchup between the third and fourth-seeds.

With the win, UST made it clear that it will keep making the most of its first playoff appearance in four years. “I think from last year, we have overachieved. I’m so proud of our players,” head coach Haydee Ong said.

The Tigresses were in control for majority of the matchup, but saw their opponents come to as close as 68-76 inside the last three minutes.

It was at that point that Larosa spearheaded an 8-0 counter that re-increased their lead to 84-68 with 1:14 remaining.

The Lady Tamaraws would not be able to threaten the rest of the way.

UST will now move on to take on second-seed and twice-to-beat University of the East on Wednesday. Even with the tall task, Ong remained upbeat in saying, “It’s been more than a decade since the Tigresses went to the Finals. It’s our job to do this for the Thomasian community.”

She then continued, “As it told the girls, we need to take it one game at a time. Lahat ng games namin, knockout games na e.”

For FEU, graduating player Precious Arellano showed the way with 19 points, six assists, three rebounds, and three steals.
