Tigresses forge sudden death with UE
The UST Tigresses are ready for another do-or-die match in the UAAP Season 80 Women's Basketball tournament, this time against the feisty UE Lady Warriors.

The UST Tigresses forced a do-or-die match as they dispatched the UE Lady Warriors, 63-53, in the stepladder semifinals of the UAAP Season 80 Women’s Basketball tournament at the Mall of Asia Arena on Wednesday morning.

UST, who defeated the FEU Lady Tamaraws in the first stepladder semifinals match, was the more focused team from the get-go, establishing an 18-point lead, 31-13, midway through the second quarter.

The Tigresses cruised through the game and led by 16 in the payoff period, 56-40, before the Lady Warriors fought back and almost ran away with it.

UE forced UST to turn over the ball several times in the late stages of the game. and hit timely baskets which cut the lead to six, 59-53, following a Ruthlaine Tacula steal and layup with 1:29 left.

Kikay Gandalla then responded with the dagger for UST with a booming triple from the right wing with 11.9 seconds left to nullify the twice-to-beat advantage enjoyed by the second-place Lady Warriors.

Anjel Anies topscored for UST, scoring 21, including four triples. Jhenn Angeles meanwhile almost finished with a triple-double, recording 12 points, 11 rebounds, and eight assists.

Tacula meanwhile paced UE’s offense with 14 points before fouling out late in the game. Love Sto. Domingo added 12 markers and 12 boards.

“We’re one step away from the finals and I know UE will be right back on Saturday so we have to be prepared and ready to counter whatever adjustment they will make,” UST head coach Haydee Ong said after the game.

Though UST won the game, the Tigresses committed 25 turnovers, leading to 12 points. UE meanwhile had a forgettable shooting clip of 21 percent.

On facing the Lady Warriors a second time around, Ong said that the team’s mindset has already been primed, as they already went through a do-or-die match against the Lady Tamaraws.

UST and UE will battle for a trip to the Finals against idle NU on Saturday, Nov. 25, 11 am, at the same venue.
